Taking Up Your Cross: The Unspeakable Joy of Following Jesus
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (February, 2000)
Author: Tricia McCary Rhodes
Average review score:

Holiness as Love for Jesus, Our Heavenly Bridegroom
What a fabulous book for Lent--or for any time when you want to go deeper with God. This book deals with topics like humility, simplicity and holiness, but none of it is dry "lecturing." All of the encouragement is set in the context of the relationship between Jesus and the believer which the Bible describes as the "Bridegroom-Bride" paradigm. The author's central point is, who wouldn't want to be obedient if she were in love with someone as wonderful as Jesus is. This book will transform your views about God and religion!

Teaching Cross-Culturally: An Incarnation Model for Learning and Teaching
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (May, 2003)
Authors: Judith E. Lingenfelter, Sherwood G. Lingenfelter, and Milada G. Broukal
Average review score:

Fabulous overview of Cross-Cultural Teaching
There's lots of books out there on teaching, and lots of books on multiculturalism, but FINALLY a book that addresses each area from the other's perspective! This book deals with the nuts and bolts of different cultures, but it also comes from an academic perspective, including the research and citations to back it up. Written by two PhDs with the practical knowledge to back up the scholarship, this gave me the answers I needed for working with my inner city/multicultural church groups. It's very readable, and reasonably priced. I'm delighted with it and recommend it highly.

Teaching Cultures: Knowledge for Teaching First Grade in France and the United States (Language & Social Processes.)
Published in Hardcover by Hampton Pr (May, 2002)
Author: Kathryn M. Anderson-Levitt
Average review score:

An excellent and needed study
Anderson-Levitt, one of this generation's more important anthropologists studying education, has finally released her first really important book-length work. This is an excellent work on all levels. Well-written, researched to the hilt, and generous in her citations of the work of others, Anderson-Levitt has written what is certainly a first-rate work. But perhaps more importantly, it is a book that is of use both to educators in the US and French-speaking world, anthropologists and sociologists of education, and to a general readership interested in some of the most important questions of cultural aquisition. Highly recommended on all levels...

The Theology of the Cross for the 21st Century: Signposts for a Multicultural Witness
Published in Paperback by Concordia Publishing House (January, 2003)
Authors: Alberto L. Garcia and A. R. Victor Raj
Average review score:

Worthy Compilation of Applying Theology of Cross to Today
This book is collection of essays on using the theology of the cross as opposed to the theology of glory in our times of mulicultural witness.

Broken into the three categories of Signposts, Global Themes and North American Themes, this collection engages the reader to consider the biblical approach of emphasis and center on the cross. Although many may be offended by this and cry out, we do already, not so fast. Read and learn what this means biblically before so doing.

There is much to be gained from this well thought out work, especially how the theology of the cross might play itself out in such diverse witness situations such as Russia, Latinos in America, etc. Bioethics and postmoderism are explored as well.

Witness we must, and this work admonishes the body of Christ to do it with the core and heart of God's revelation, the theology of the cross. Lutherans who already realize this will be encouraged, and those outside such a theology will gain insight into the mind of God for outreach.

Theory of Multicultural Counseling and Therapy
Published in Hardcover by Wadsworth Publishing (15 March, 1996)
Authors: Derald Wing Sue, Allen E. Ivey, Paul B. Pedersen, and Paul B. Pederson
Average review score:

The Most Promising CounselingTheory in Decades
As the profession of counseling moves forward, there is a growing need for theories to respond to the developing needs of our clientele. "A Theory of Multicultural Counseling and Therapy" (MCT) provides an excellent template for this process to begin. MCT is designed in such a way that it provides practitioners and practitioners-in-training the logical accumulation of years of research on counseling in a diverse society. This text moves counselors away from seeing people of differing cultures in a stereotypical manner toward a more theoretically integrative way of conceptualizing clients. The "common factors" approach used throughout the text focuses on shared characteristics from different schools of counseling and psychotherapy. MCT has arrived as the birth of a forward-looking counseling metatheory both responsive to past data as well as calling for research to challenge and modify it in the future. I strongly feel that all practicing psychologists and counselors should read MCT and that it should be included in the coursework of every trainee. Multicultural practice should no longer be considered a specialty, but instead should be seen as currently normative and the future of our field.

Through the Window: The Terrifying True Story of Cross-Country Killer Tommy Lynn Sells
Published in Mass Market Paperback by St. Martin's Press (April, 2003)
Author: Diane Fanning
Average review score:

Fascinating!
An excellent book - but rather frightening! It is hard to believe that anyone could commit such horrendous crimes and not get caught for such a long time. And it is easy to read with a smooth, seamless delivery that glides from page to page. Even the courtroom scene was riveting with the notes that passed between the killer and his attorney adding a dimension to the coverage that you seldom see. The Afterword wrapped it all up so well with quotes from the Texas Rangers, a letter from Tommy Lynn Sells and the personal impressions of the author. A fascinating read.

Thy Honored Name: A History of the College of the Holy Cross, 1843-1994
Published in Hardcover by Catholic Univ of Amer Pr (March, 1999)
Author: Anthony J. Kuzniewski
Average review score:

A true storyteller
Anyone who attended Holy Cross or has an attachment to the College in one way or another will love this book. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn and reminisce at the same time. Father Kuzniewski's exhaustive research is well evident in this fact-filled history. I found myself quickly becoming engrossed, and particularly enjoyed the sections which discussed the motivation behind the founding of the College and the beginning of coeducation. A volume every alum should have.
